The name of this monumental and stately gentleman's house is 'Onder de Eiken'. Nothing could be further from the truth. What a sight.
After the completion of this characteristic house on stilts, as one of the first along this part of the Hoofdkade in 1912, were planted along the unpaved quay of the island between the new Stads-Ter Apeler canal and the Round American Oaks. This to give the already beautiful, but rich housing of the affluent even more charm. More appropriately could it not be, the so-called Golden Aailand, or gentlemen's neighborhood, has since been adorned in autumn with golden leaves from the American Oaks. They are still there.
To the point: This is one of the best preserved, non-timbered authentic gentleman's residence that we can encounter in this day and age. It is now being put on the market by the third inhabitant in 113 years. All occupants have lived in the house with love and respect. Of course, adaptations were carried out over the decades to keep living comfort up-to-date. For example, a chimney was built for heating the living room in 1938, and at the same time a bathroom on the upper floor was realized.
At some point, central heating was installed, part of the windows were replaced with double glazing, the kitchen was updated, and there were minor adjustments to the layout. This is all part of living in a house and adapting to higher comfort standards. However, this has been done with immense respect for the structure itself. Nowhere in the house do you get the feeling that you are encountering anachronisms.
In the attic we still find the quarters of the live-in domestic staff, clearly abandoned for decades. It is a relic of bygone times.
Actually, it is incomprehensible that this heritage has not been included in the list of national monuments. The period image and condition are convincing. It did not prevent the owner from optimally preserving the property.
The current owner (since 1973) has not only lived in the building but also run a practice from this location. For this purpose, an annex was realized in 1975, which was significantly expanded again in 1980. As the practice stopped operating several years ago, the building has been adapted for guest accommodation.
The striking feature of this building is that it still has a completely authentic 1970s/1980s appearance, which is now also included in the register of monuments by the national agency for cultural heritage.
In short, two very different buildings in one purchase, both with their unique authentic features.
Detailed description of the order:
Main house: Fully basemented and divided into various rooms, including the laundry room, boiler room, and wine cellar, where one can easily get lost.
Beautiful Apartment: Entirely stylish and meticulously preserved. Fully in style and ready for habitation at a high level with all the monumental details that make life worthwhile. The special designation of the entrance, hall, staircase, and toilet must not be overlooked.
The floor, accessible via the impressive stone staircase with enormous stained glass window, is spacious and can be described as chic. The bedrooms are comfortable and atmospheric, and the bathroom is stylish and adequate. Balconies and sun terraces are plentiful.
The attic has not been in use for years, but it is accessible via a fixed ladder. Here we find storage space and possibly additional rooms, as well as the former living quarters of the staff. Time seems to have stood still here.
The guest house, accessible independently, exudes the atmosphere of a time not so long past, which most of us still vividly remember. In fact, this is a multifunctional building that now serves as a guest house for our by-now extremely grown children and descendants, but could clearly be used as an office or business space by the next inhabitant.
For the exact layout, we would like to refer to the maps and film, for the readability of this ode to a monument.
Finally, for the enthusiasts outside the region.
Ter Apel unfortunately comes up very regularly in the news in a rather negative way regarding very specific national issues. Regardless of all opinions that exist about it, Ter Apel is a beautiful border village with great historical value. Think also of the centuries-old monastery and the surroundings are far-reaching tolerant to the signs of the times, the population counts a small 10 thousand inhabitants. It is also pleasant to stay in the forests and stream valleys of the beautiful Westerwolde. Among other things, all necessary facilities are present. Larger cities such as Groningen and Emmen are easily accessible. The offered location is far from the reception location, the residents have never experienced any serious disturbance. How do we calculate this?
The interest rate is based on the lowest 10-year fixed rate for a single mortgage part. The stated rate (3% zonder NHG) was verified on 16-11-2025. This calculation is based on an annuity mortgage that is fully repaid, with monthly payments remaining the same throughout the entire term. The actual interest rate and net monthly costs may vary depending on your personal situation and the mortgage provider. Consult a financial advisor for an accurate calculation and advice. No rights can be derived from this calculation; it is for indicative purposes only.
